Overview

This pharmacological decolonization treatment is a multi-component antimicrobial regimen evaluated in a randomized controlled study (NCT00966446) led by Joseph Kim. The regimen is designed to eliminate methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carriage in community outpatients. It consists of a three-pronged approach: topical decolonization using chlorhexidine gluconate (4% body scrub and 2% shampoo daily), intranasal decolonization using mupirocin 2%, fusidic acid 2%, or chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% twice daily, and systemic oral antibiotics using either trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (160/800mg) or doxycycline (100mg) twice daily for a duration of seven days. The strategy aims to reduce the reservoir of MRSA on the skin, in the nares, and systemically to prevent recurrent infections and transmission in the community setting.
