Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pharmalgen Vespula spp. (brand name: Pharmalgen Wasp Venom) is a biologic allergen immunotherapy product manufactured by ALK-Abelló. Its active ingredient is partially purified, freeze-dried Vespula spp. (wasp/yellow jacket) venom, formulated as a powder and solvent for solution for injection. It is indicated for both the diagnosis (via skin testing) and treatment (via subcutaneous venom immunotherapy) of IgE-mediated allergy to wasp venom (insect venom hypersensitivity). The therapy works by desensitizing patients to wasp venom allergens, thereby preventing or reducing the severity of future systemic allergic reactions. It must be administered under medical supervision in a clinical setting equipped for cardiopulmonary resuscitation due to the risk of severe systemic allergic reactions.
