Overview

Phaseoloideside E (PE) is a novel oleanane-type triterpene saponin isolated from the seed kernels of *Entada phaseoloides* (Linn.) Merr. It has demonstrated potent cytotoxic activity against various malignant cell lines, including the Ec-109 esophageal carcinoma cell line. PE induces apoptosis through a mechanism involving the up-regulation of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, which leads to a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential, reduction in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and depletion of glutathione (GSH) content. This oxidative stress triggers the intrinsic apoptotic pathway, characterized by a reduced Bcl-2/Bax ratio and the activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3. Notably, PE appears to selectively induce cell death in transformed cells while sparing untransformed cells, suggesting its potential as a targeted therapeutic agent for esophageal carcinoma.
