Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phaseolus vulgaris extract is a dietary supplement derived from the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), most often from white kidney beans. The primary mechanism of action is inhibition of alpha-amylase in the gastrointestinal tract. By blocking this enzyme’s activity, the extract reduces or delays the digestion and absorption of complex carbohydrates into simple sugars. This leads to decreased caloric intake from carbohydrates and may help promote weight loss and reduce body fat mass[2][4][5][8]. Clinical studies have shown that regular intake can result in significant reductions in body weight and fat percentage compared to placebo[4]. The product is typically standardized for its alpha-amylase inhibitor content (such as phaseolamin) and may also contain phytohemagglutinin[5]. It is marketed primarily for weight management.
