Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phaseolus vulgaris lectin is a carbohydrate-binding protein found in common beans such as kidney beans. It exists mainly as erythroagglutinin(PHE-E) or leucoagglutinin(PHE-L). These proteins bind specific sugar residues on cell surfaces causing agglomeration(erythrocytes/leukocytes). They have both harmful effects(raw ingestion causes intestinal disorders)and possible health benefits(anti-cancer/anti-HIV/antimicrobial activities). Used mainly in biomedical research.
