Overview

PhD9 antibody is a plant-made monoclonal antibody developed as a medical countermeasure for ricin exposure. It was originally developed by Defence Research & Development Canada (DRDC) and is being advanced by AntoXa Corporation under exclusive license from DRDC. The primary mechanism of action is the prevention of ricin toxin from penetrating cells, thereby neutralizing its toxic effects. Ricin is an extremely potent toxin derived from the castor bean plant (*Ricinus communis*) and classified as a Category B bioterrorism threat due to its lethality and ease of production. There are currently no approved antidotes for ricin poisoning; PhD9 represents a novel therapeutic approach with demonstrated efficacy in preclinical in vitro and in vivo studies. The drug candidate is produced using a proprietary plant-based manufacturing platform (vivoXPRESS®), which enables cost-effective large-scale production suitable for rapid deployment during biological emergencies[1][2][3][4][5][7].
