Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mesima (Phellinus linteus mycelium extract) is an approved immunomodulatory and immunostimulant drug developed by Hankook Shinyak in collaboration with the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB). It is derived from the mycelium of the medicinal mushroom *Phellinus linteus* (known as Sang-Hwang in Korea) and contains the protein-bound polysaccharide PPLA (Protein Polysaccharide of Phellinus linteus Aoshima). Mesima is approved in South Korea as an adjuvant therapy to enhance immune function in patients undergoing chemotherapy following surgery for digestive system cancers (including gastric, esophageal, duodenal, colon, and rectal cancers) and liver cancer. It is also indicated for the treatment of metrorrhagia, leucorrhea, menstrual irregularity, and enterohemorrhage. Mesima acts as a biological response modifier, stimulating B-lymphocytes, activating macrophages, and modulating cytokine production (such as enhancing IFN-γ and IL-12) to boost host antitumor immunity and reduce chemotherapy-induced toxicity.
