Overview

Otodolor is a topical otic solution used for the symptomatic treatment of pain associated with external ear infections (otitis externa) and middle ear inflammation (otitis media) with an intact eardrum. It is a combination product containing phenazone, an analgesic and antipyretic agent, and procaine hydrochloride, a local anesthetic of the ester type. Phenazone acts by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzymes, thereby reducing pain and inflammation. Procaine hydrochloride provides rapid local pain relief by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, which inhibits nerve impulse conduction. The product is available in standard and "forte" formulations, with the latter typically containing a higher concentration of the local anesthetic. It was developed by Dr. Peithner KG in Austria and is commonly used as a topical analgesic for ear-related discomfort.
