Overview

Phenazopyridine is a small molecule urinary tract analgesic used to relieve pain, burning, irritation, urgency, and frequency associated with irritation of the lower urinary tract mucosa caused by infection (such as urinary tract infections), trauma, surgery, endoscopic procedures, or catheter use. It does not treat the underlying cause of symptoms (e.g., it is not an antibiotic) but provides symptomatic relief. The drug is an azo dye that exerts a direct topical analgesic effect on the mucosa lining of the urinary tract after being rapidly excreted into urine by the kidneys. Its precise mechanism of action remains unclear but is believed to involve local anesthetic effects on the urothelium[1][2][3][4][5][6].
