phenethicillin

Phenethicillin (also known as pheneticillin) is a beta-lactam antibiotic of the penicillin class. It is an oral penicillin used primarily for the treatment of upper and lower respiratory tract infections, as well as skin and soft tissue infections. Its mechanism of action involves binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, thereby blocking the final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. This leads to cell lysis mediated by autolytic enzymes within bacteria. Phenethicillin is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract but does not cross the blood-brain barrier in significant amounts[1][2][3][4]. It is approved for use internationally.
