pheneturide

Pheneturide is a small molecule anticonvulsant of the ureide class that has historically been used in the treatment of severe epilepsy when other less-toxic drugs have failed. It is conceptually formed as a metabolic degradation product from phenobarbital and is considered obsolete due to the availability of safer alternatives. Pheneturide acts by stabilizing excessive electrical activity in the brain and inhibits the metabolism of other anticonvulsants such as phenytoin—thereby increasing their plasma levels. Its primary indication has been for severe or refractory epilepsy (including psychomotor seizures). The drug has been marketed under various brand names in Europe (notably Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom), but its use today is rare[1][4][6].
