Overview

Phenibut is a neuropsychotropic drug developed in Russia in the 1960s and used primarily as an anxiolytic and nootropic agent. It is structurally similar to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and acts mainly as a GABA-B receptor agonist with some activity at the GABA-A receptor. Phenibut also stimulates dopamine receptors and antagonizes beta-phenethylamine (PEA), which may contribute to its anxiolytic effects. It is widely used in Russia and some Eastern European countries for treating anxiety, insomnia, tension, fear, alcohol withdrawal syndrome, stammering (stuttering), vestibular disorders, depression-related asthenia (weakness), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and as a pre/post-operative medication. Phenibut has not been approved by regulatory agencies such as the FDA in the United States or EMA in Europe due to safety concerns including dependence potential[1][2][3][5][6][8].
