Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phenol EZ Swab is a topical pharmaceutical product and medical device developed by Pedinol (a brand under Ortho Dermatologics) containing 89% liquified phenol (USP grade). It is specifically designed for professional use in podiatric and dermatologic procedures, most notably for chemical matrixectomy, which is the permanent destruction of the nail matrix to treat recurrent ingrown nails (onychocryptosis). Phenol acts as a potent chemical cauterant and protein denaturant, effectively necrotizing the targeted tissue to prevent nail regrowth. Additionally, it provides secondary benefits as a topical anesthetic and antiseptic. The product is uniquely packaged in a single-use, self-contained ampule with an integrated microbrush applicator, allowing for precise, controlled application while minimizing the risk of accidental skin contact or environmental contamination.
