Overview

Phenothiazine chloride is a small molecule photosensitizer belonging to the phenothiazine dye class, primarily utilized in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). In clinical research, specifically studies led by the University of Zurich, it is applied topically into periodontal pockets to treat chronic periodontitis. The mechanism involves the formation of metachromatic complexes with bacterial lipopolysaccharides; upon activation by light at wavelengths of approximately 635–670 nm (typically via laser or LED), the compound generates cytotoxic reactive oxygen species that target and destroy bacterial cell structures. It is currently used as an investigational agent in dental research rather than a commercially approved pharmaceutical product.
