Overview

Phenothrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide used primarily to control adult fleas and ticks on pets and in the environment, as well as head lice in humans. It acts by disrupting the normal function of voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells of insects, causing prolonged channel opening, repetitive nerve discharge, paralysis, and death. Phenothrin is less toxic to mammals due to differences in sodium channel sensitivity and metabolic detoxification pathways. It is often formulated for topical use or as an aerosol for domestic pest control. Resistance has been reported among some target insect populations[1][2][3][4][6][8].
