Overview

Phenoxypropazine is a non-selective and irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) of the hydrazine chemical class. It was introduced in 1961 as an oral antidepressant but was withdrawn from the market in 1966 due to its potential for hepatotoxicity, specifically drug-induced liver injury. The drug acts by inhibiting monoamine oxidase enzymes, thereby increasing levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the brain. Its primary use was for depressive disorders[1][2][3][5].
