Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phenozanoic acid, marketed under the brand name Dibufelon, is a small molecule antiepileptic drug developed by the Russian pharmaceutical company PIQ-Pharma. It is approved in Russia as an adjunctive therapy for adults with focal (partial) epilepsy, with or without secondary generalization. Phenozanoic acid is a hindered phenol derivative that acts as a potent antioxidant and membrane stabilizer. Its primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of free-radical lipid peroxidation within neuronal membranes, which helps to maintain membrane integrity and reduce neuronal hyperexcitability. By mitigating oxidative stress, it enhances the efficacy of conventional antiepileptic drugs and may provide neuroprotective benefits in the context of chronic seizure disorders.
