Phenprocoumon is a long-acting oral anticoagulant and a coumarin derivative. It acts as a vitamin K antagonist by inhibiting the enzyme vitamin K epoxide reductase, which is necessary for the synthesis of coagulation factors II, VII, IX, and X. It is used for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disorders such as venous thrombosis, thromboembolism, and pulmonary embolism. The most common adverse effect is bleeding.
