Phensedyl

Phensedyl is an oral cough and cold syrup brand containing the opioid antitussive codeine phosphate and the first-generation antihistamine promethazine hydrochloride, or in some linctus formulations codeine phosphate with the antihistamine chlorpheniramine maleate. These components act synergistically to suppress the cough reflex via central μ‑opioid receptor activity, reduce histamine-mediated upper respiratory symptoms through H1-receptor blockade, and provide mild sedative effects that can alleviate associated discomfort. The product is indicated for short-term relief of dry, non‑productive cough and allergic cold symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and throat irritation, but carries risks of respiratory depression, sedation, constipation, and dependence due to codeine, and anticholinergic and sedative adverse effects from the antihistamine.
