Overview

Phensuximide is an orally active anticonvulsant and antiepileptic drug of the succinimide class. It is primarily used for the treatment of absence (petit mal) seizures. Its mechanism of action is not fully understood but may involve inhibition of depolarization-induced accumulation of cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP in brain tissue and depression of nerve transmission in the motor cortex. Phensuximide may also act by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels to reduce neuronal excitability and has been described as a benzodiazepine receptor agonist[1][2][6]. The drug is rapidly absorbed after oral administration and metabolized hepatically.
