Overview

Phenyl aminosalicylate is the phenyl ester of para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS), classified as a small molecule drug. It was developed as a second-line antituberculosis agent, with reports suggesting it has fewer side effects than simple salts of para-aminosalicylic acid, though hypersensitivity reactions and gastrointestinal upset are still common. Its mechanism of action is presumed to be similar to other aminosalicylates, which act primarily by inhibiting bacterial folic acid synthesis and exerting anti-inflammatory effects in the gut. The drug was approved in the United States but has since been withdrawn from the market[1][2][3][5].
