Phenyl salicylate is a small molecule drug classified as a 2-hydroxybenzoic acid phenyl ester. It acts as a mild analgesic and is used primarily for pain relief by releasing salicylate (the active component in aspirin). Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes—specifically prostaglandin G/H synthase 1 and 2—thereby reducing the formation of prostaglandins responsible for inflammation and pain. Phenyl salicylate is also found in combination products for urinary tract discomfort or infection-related symptoms.
