Overview

Phenyldehydroalanine (PDA) is an alpha,beta-unsaturated aromatic amino acid that was synthesized to serve as a sensitive spectroscopic probe. It is utilized in biochemical research to investigate the acylation process of the enzyme papain by specific substrates and inhibitors. The interaction of PDA, particularly when incorporated into peptides, with papain leads to significant red shifts in its absorption maxima, enabling the spectroscopic monitoring of acyl enzyme formation.
