Phenylethyl resorcinol is a synthetic small molecule used primarily as a skin-lightening and antioxidant agent in cosmetic products. It acts as a potent inhibitor of tyrosinase—the key enzyme involved in melanin synthesis—by interacting with the copper centers of the enzyme and preventing the formation of dopaquinone, thereby reducing melanin production. This results in decreased pigmentation and lighter skin tone. Phenylethyl resorcinol also activates p44/42 MAPK signaling pathways leading to degradation of MITF protein (a transcription factor that increases tyrosinase expression), further inhibiting melanogenesis. In addition to its depigmenting effects, it exhibits strong antioxidant properties by scavenging free radicals generated by UV exposure and may have antidermatophytic activity against certain dermatophytes such as Microsporum gypseum. It is considered more potent than kojic acid for skin lightening and has better safety compared to hydroquinone[1][2][4][5][6].
