Overview

PHER-O2 is a second-generation perfluorocarbon emulsion artificial oxygen carrier being developed as a red blood cell substitute and oxygen therapeutic, designed to dissolve and transport large amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide independent of hemoglobin. Developed initially by New Alliance Biosciences and further pursued by Sanguine, the agent consists of nanoscale perfluorocarbon droplets that can traverse microvasculature and potentially bypass vascular obstructions, thereby improving oxygen delivery and tissue viability in ischemic or hypoxic settings. As a perfluorocarbon-based product, it is intended for intravenous use in acute care contexts such as blood loss, ischemia, or situations where conventional transfusion is limited, aiming to offer long shelf life, room-temperature stability, and no need for blood typing or cross-matching.
