Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pheretima is a biological medicinal substance derived from earthworms of the genus *Pheretima*, widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the name Di Long. It is primarily recognized for its potent fibrinolytic and antithrombotic activities, which are attributed to a complex of proteolytic enzymes known as lumbrokinase. These enzymes work by directly degrading fibrin and activating plasminogen, thereby improving blood rheology and microcirculation. In clinical settings, Pheretima is investigated for its therapeutic potential in treating cerebrovascular diseases, including stroke and diabetic minimal brain lesions, as well as cardiovascular conditions. It is often administered as a powder or as part of multi-herb TCM formulations to dredge collaterals and resolve blood stasis.
