Phexxi

Phexxi is an FDA-approved, non-hormonal, on-demand vaginal contraceptive gel developed by Evofem Biosciences. It functions as a vaginal pH modulator, maintaining the acidic environment of the vagina (pH 3.5 to 4.5) even in the presence of alkaline semen, which typically raises vaginal pH to levels conducive to sperm motility. By maintaining acidity, Phexxi inhibits sperm from swimming, thereby preventing fertilization. It is applied via a pre-filled applicator within one hour before vaginal intercourse. The product is also being investigated under the development code GEN-1 (formerly EVO100) for the prevention of certain sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia and gonorrhea.
