Overview

phipa2 (also known as Pseudomonas phage phipa2) is a lytic bacteriophage belonging to the family Autographiviridae (specifically the genus Phikmvvirus) that specifically targets and lyses Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was isolated from sewage samples at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. phipa2 infects P. aeruginosa by binding to type IV pili (T4P) as its primary receptor, which is essential for bacterial twitching motility and biofilm formation. It is being investigated in preclinical research for its potential application in phage therapy to treat multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, particularly in the context of cystic fibrosis and other chronic infections.
