Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phlomis umbrosa extract (PUE) is a botanical extract derived from the perennial herb *Phlomis umbrosa Turcz*, commonly known as Caosu. It is traditionally used in East Asian medicine for its anti-inflammatory and osteogenic properties. The extract contains bioactive compounds such as iridoid glucosides (e.g., shanzhiside methyl ester), triterpenoids, and flavonoids. Research indicates that PUE modulates inflammatory pathways by suppressing the phosphorylation of ERK and p65 (NF-κB), reducing the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and decreasing levels of inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, it promotes bone growth and health by upregulating Runx2 and other osteogenic markers. While not developed as a proprietary pharmaceutical, it is recognized by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety as a functional ingredient for promoting longitudinal bone growth in children and has been investigated for treating asthma, osteoporosis, and osteoarthritis.
