Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phlomis umbrosa water extract (PUW) is a botanical extract derived from the roots of *Phlomis umbrosa Turcz.*, a perennial herb traditionally used in East Asian medicine. It is primarily investigated in preclinical research for its potential therapeutic effects on muscle atrophy, osteoporosis, and osteoarthritis. The extract functions by regulating the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway, which helps attenuate dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy by maintaining muscle mass and strength while decreasing protein degradation. PUW contains various bioactive compounds, including iridoid glycosides (such as shanzhiside methyl ester), flavonoids, and polyphenols. While not developed as a standalone pharmaceutical drug, it is a key component of EstroG-100®, a patented herbal product used for treating menopausal symptoms.
