Phloridzin is a naturally occurring dihydrochalcone glycoside found primarily in the bark of apple trees and other plants in the Rosaceae family. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of sodium-glucose cotransporters SGLT1 and SGLT2 in the kidney and intestine. By inhibiting these transporters, it prevents renal glucose reabsorption and lowers blood glucose levels. Phloridzin has been studied for its potential use in diabetes management but is not an effective drug clinically because it is rapidly hydrolyzed to phloretin in the gut when taken orally. Beyond its effects on glucose metabolism, it also exhibits antioxidant properties and has been investigated for possible roles in reducing bone loss and slowing tumor growth[1][4][5][7][9].
