Phoenix dactylifera pollen, commonly known as date palm pollen (DPP), is a natural product derived from the male flowers of the date palm tree. It is traditionally used in various cultures, particularly in the Middle East, to treat male infertility. The therapeutic effect is primarily attributed to its potent antioxidant properties, mediated by high concentrations of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and catechins. DPP acts by neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and upregulating the expression of key antioxidant genes, including Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2), superoxide dismutase (SOD2), glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), and catalase (CAT). Clinical studies have demonstrated that oral administration of DPP can significantly improve semen quality, including sperm count, motility, and morphology, by reducing oxidative stress-induced damage to spermatozoa.
