Phosphate-buffered saline (IVAC)

Phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) is an isotonic water-based salt solution containing disodium hydrogen phosphate, sodium chloride and, in some formulations, potassium chloride and potassium dihydrogen phosphate. In the context of clinical development by the Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (IVAC) in Vietnam, this specific PBS formulation (pH 7.2) was utilized as the placebo control in Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials for the COVIVAC (NDV-HXP-S) COVID-19 vaccine. As a placebo, it is pharmacologically inactive and serves to provide a baseline for safety and immunogenicity comparisons against active vaccine candidates in randomized, observer-blind study designs.
