Overview

Phosphatidyl serine (PS) is a phospholipid that is a crucial component of cell membranes, particularly abundant in the brain. It plays a vital role in maintaining membrane structure, fluidity, and intercellular communication. PS is involved in various cellular processes, including signal transduction, neurotransmitter release, and the regulation of protein kinase C. A key function of PS is its role in apoptosis (programmed cell death), where its externalization to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane acts as an "eat-me" signal for phagocytes, facilitating the orderly removal of dying cells without inflammation. It is also studied for its potential cognitive and neuropsychological benefits, supporting memory, learning, concentration, and mood balance, and helping to regulate the body's stress response by balancing cortisol levels. PS is available as a dietary supplement, often derived from soy or sunflower lecithin.
