Phosphatidylcholine is a naturally occurring phospholipid and a major component of cell membranes in animals and plants. It is found abundantly in foods such as eggs, soybeans, mustard, sunflower seeds, red meat, and whole grains. Phosphatidylcholine serves as a source of choline for the synthesis of acetylcholine—a neurotransmitter important for memory and other neurological functions—and plays an essential role in maintaining cell membrane integrity and fluidity[1][3][4][9]. It is also involved in lipid metabolism by acting as an emulsifier to break down fats. Phosphatidylcholine has been used as a dietary supplement for various indications including cognitive support (memory loss/Alzheimer’s disease), liver health (hepatitis/fatty liver), cardiovascular health (improving cholesterol profiles), inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis), skin conditions (eczema/acne), dissolving fat deposits or lipomas via injection or cosmetic procedures (“fat-dissolving” injections), gallstone prevention/dissolution, PMS symptom relief, immune system support, athletic performance enhancement due to its role in acetylcholine production for muscle activity[2][3][5][6][7]. Mechanistically: - As a precursor to acetylcholine it may enhance cholinergic neurotransmission. - As an emulsifier it can break down fat deposits when injected subcutaneously. - In the GI tract it supports the protective mucus layer and reduces inflammation. - In the liver it helps prevent fibrosis/cell death from toxins or viral damage. It is available orally (capsules/powder/liquid) as well as intravenously or subcutaneously/intramuscularly for certain medical/cosmetic uses. Topical formulations are also used in some skin creams[2][3].
