Overview

Phosphatidylcholine + silymarin is a combination product in which the flavonolignan complex *silymarin* (primarily its most active component, *silybin*) is combined with *phosphatidylcholine*, a major phospholipid found in cell membranes. This formulation is designed to enhance the oral bioavailability of silymarin by forming a lipid-compatible phytosome complex. Silymarin acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent with hepatoprotective properties; it inhibits hepatotoxin binding to hepatocyte membranes, reduces glutathione oxidation (enhancing hepatic glutathione levels), stimulates ribosomal RNA polymerase for protein synthesis and liver regeneration, and modulates inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α[4][5][6][8]. Phosphatidylcholine serves both as a membrane stabilizer and absorption enhancer for silymarin[4][5]. The combination has been studied primarily for liver-related conditions including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatitis (viral or drug-induced), cirrhosis, and general support of hepatic function[1][3][4]. Clinical trials suggest improved liver enzyme profiles and histology in NAFLD patients treated with this combination compared to placebo[1], though some studies show mixed efficacy results[3].
