Phosphatidylcholine-curcumin complex is a formulation designed to enhance the bioavailability of curcumin, the active polyphenolic compound in turmeric (Curcuma longa), by forming a molecular complex with phosphatidylcholine. Curcumin alone has poor intestinal absorption and rapid metabolism, limiting its therapeutic potential. Complexation with phosphatidylcholine increases both water and lipid solubility of curcumin, resulting in significantly improved absorption and pharmacokinetics compared to plain curcumin[1][3]. This enhanced delivery system is marketed under brand names such as Meriva. The primary mechanism of action involves modulation of multiple signaling molecules related to inflammation (e.g., NF-κB), oxidative stress (antioxidant activity), apoptosis regulation, and inhibition of enzymes like cyclooxygenase-2[5]. The formulation has been studied for hepatoprotective effects as well as potential benefits in conditions such as cancer, liver disease, neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease), metabolic syndrome, and chronic inflammatory diseases[1][3][6].
