Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phosphatidylserine + omega-3 is a combination dietary supplement containing the phospholipid phosphatidylserine (PS) and omega-3 fatty acids (primarily docosahexaenoic acid [DHA] and eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA]). Both components are essential for healthy brain function. Phosphatidylserine is a key structural component of neuronal cell membranes and supports neurotransmitter release, memory formation, mood regulation, and stress response. Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA/EPA) are critical for maintaining membrane fluidity in neurons and have anti-inflammatory properties. The combination has been studied for cognitive enhancement in elderly individuals with memory complaints or mild cognitive impairment, as well as adjunctive therapy in late-life depression resistant to antidepressants[1][2][4]. It may also help reduce symptoms of ADHD in children[4][7], improve stress tolerance by modulating hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity[2], support visual health[5], reduce muscle soreness after exercise[7], and lower cortisol levels associated with chronic stress or overtraining[1][2]. The mechanism involves synergistic effects on neuronal membrane integrity/functionality, neurotransmitter signaling (acetylcholine, dopamine), protein kinase activation related to learning/memory processes (for PS), anti-inflammatory action (for omega-3s), normalization of circadian cortisol rhythms in depression/stress states, and improved bioavailability when co-formulated due to lipid solubility requirements.
