Phosphatidylserine liposomes are specialized lipid-based nanoparticles composed of the phospholipid phosphatidylserine (PS). These liposomes are designed to mimic the surface of apoptotic cells, which naturally expose PS as an "eat-me" signal to trigger phagocytosis by macrophages and other phagocytes through phosphatidylserine receptors. In oncology research, PS liposomes are utilized both as standalone agents to modulate the tumor microenvironment and as delivery vehicles for therapeutic payloads, such as 7-ketocholesterol (7KC). While empty PS liposomes have been observed to potentially promote tumor growth in some models by inducing an immunosuppressive environment, loaded versions like PS/7KC are being investigated for their ability to inhibit tumor growth in melanoma and breast adenocarcinoma by inducing autophagy and altering macrophage activity.
