Phosphatidylserine liposomes are a preclinical-stage therapeutic formulation being developed by Pharmin USA. This asset consists of liposomal vesicles containing phosphatidylserine (PS), a phospholipid that naturally resides on the inner leaflet of the cell membrane and is exposed on the surface of apoptotic cells as an "eat-me" signal. By mimicking the surface of apoptotic cells, these liposomes interact with phosphatidylserine receptors on macrophages and other phagocytic cells, triggering anti-inflammatory signaling pathways. This biomimetic approach is designed to induce the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as TGF-β and IL-10, while suppressing pro-inflammatory mediators. Pharmin USA is investigating the potential of this formulation across several indications, including glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, stroke, depression, nephrotoxicity, and hypersensitivity, with published animal model studies supporting its development.
