Phosphocreatine is a naturally occurring, phosphorylated form of creatine that serves as a rapidly mobilizable reserve of high-energy phosphates in skeletal muscle, myocardium, and the brain. It plays a crucial role in cellular energy homeostasis by donating its phosphate group to adenosine diphosphate (ADP), regenerating adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is essential for muscular contraction and other energy-demanding processes. The enzyme creatine kinase catalyzes this reversible reaction. Phosphocreatine is used intravenously in some countries as a cardioprotective agent during cardiac surgery and for certain cardiovascular conditions. It has also been explored for use in ischemic stroke and other diseases characterized by acute energy deficits, though clinical evidence remains limited.
