Phosphoglycolohydroxamic acid is a small molecule and the hydroxamate derivative of phosphoglycolic acid. It acts as a potent competitive inhibitor of several key metabolic enzymes, notably triose-phosphate isomerase (TPI) and fructose-bisphosphate aldolase (aldolase), both of which are involved in glycolysis. Additionally, it has been shown to tightly bind and inhibit methylglyoxal synthase. Its mechanism involves mimicking the transition state or substrate for these enzymes, thereby blocking their activity. This compound has been used primarily as an experimental biochemical tool in enzymology research to probe enzyme mechanisms and potential antibacterial or antifungal effects due to its inhibition of essential metabolic pathways[1][3][6][8]. It is not approved for clinical use.
