Phosphonoethylamine (PEA) is an artificial substrate for CTP-phosphoethanolamine cytidylyltransferase (Pcyt2), a rate-limiting enzyme in phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) synthesis. It is a phosphonate analog of phosphoethanolamine (PEtn), the natural Pcyt2 substrate, where the phosphorus group is linked by a C-P bond. PEA is a biogenic compound found in various organisms, including humans. It is being investigated for its therapeutic potential in reversing nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) by stimulating flux through the CDP-ethanolamine Kennedy pathway, thereby ameliorating the consequences of Pcyt2 deficiency.
