Overview

Phosphorus-32 colloid (chromic phosphate P 32) is a radiotherapeutic agent used primarily for intracavitary administration to treat malignant effusions associated with advanced cancers, as well as cystic brain tumors such as craniopharyngioma and astrocytoma. It consists of the radioactive isotope phosphorus P‑32 in a colloidal suspension, which emits beta particles (β-) that induce localized cytotoxicity by damaging cellular DNA and generating free radicals. The limited tissue penetration of beta radiation allows for targeted destruction of malignant cells lining body cavities (pleural, peritoneal, or pericardial spaces), minimizing exposure to healthy tissues. Historically, it has also been used in radiosynovectomy for chronic synovitis but has largely been replaced by other isotopes in this indication[1][2][3][4][5][8].
