Overview

Phosphorus p32 is a radioactive isotope of phosphorus used as a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical in oncology and hematology. It emits beta particles, delivering local radiation to dividing cells primarily by incorporating into cellular DNA, which causes double-strand DNA breaks and cytotoxicity[1][2][7][10]. Its primary mechanism is selective uptake by highly proliferative tissue, including hematopoietic cells and malignant cells, leading to cell death[2][7]. Major clinical indications include treating polycythemia vera, chronic myelocytic leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and palliative management of intractable malignant pleural or peritoneal effusions and pain from bone metastases[2][3][4][5][6][8][9]. In suspension form (chromic phosphate p 32 or Phosphocol P 32), it is approved for intracavitary use for malignant effusions; as sodium phosphate P 32, it is used intravenously or orally for hematologic disorders and metastases[3][4][6][8].
