Photodithazine is a second-generation photosensitizer derived from chlorin e6, specifically formulated as a bis-N-methylglucamine salt to enhance water solubility and bioavailability. Developed primarily for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), it exhibits a high absorption peak in the red spectrum at approximately 660 nm. Upon activation by light of this wavelength, Photodithazine undergoes a transition to an excited state, transferring energy to molecular oxygen to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as singlet oxygen. These ROS cause localized oxidative damage, leading to the destruction of neoplastic cells, bacteria, and fungi via necrosis or apoptosis. It is utilized clinically for various oncological conditions, gynecological disorders like vulvar lichen sclerosus, and inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, and is extensively researched for its efficacy against multidrug-resistant biofilms.
