PhotoDOX I-CPT is an investigational photoactivated nanoparticle therapy developed by POP Biotechnologies for the treatment of locally advanced, inoperable hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). The formulation consists of the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin encapsulated within proprietary porphyrin-phospholipid (PoP) liposomes. The treatment modality involves the administration of the nanoparticle formulation followed by the application of 665-nm red laser light delivered via fiber-optic probes inserted directly into the tumor (interstitial light delivery). This light activation triggers a dual mechanism: a photodynamic effect that induces localized vascular damage and the rapid, targeted release of the encapsulated doxorubicin directly within the tumor microenvironment. This approach is designed to maximize local drug concentration and therapeutic efficacy while minimizing systemic toxicity.
