Terlipressin acts as a selective agonist of **vasopressin V1 receptors** on vascular smooth muscle, inducing splanchnic vasoconstriction to reduce portal hypertension and ascites formation. Developed by LAT Pharma, it received **FDA Orphan Drug Designation** for ascites due to liver cirrhosis.[5][7][15]
