Phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid (PAP) is a synthetic organic peroxy acid used as a non-peroxide tooth bleaching agent. Developed by Sylphar NV, it is primarily indicated for the treatment of extrinsic tooth discoloration and deposits. Unlike traditional hydrogen peroxide-based whiteners, PAP acts via direct peracid oxygen transfer to oxidize chromogens (stains) within the enamel without generating reactive oxygen species (free radicals). This mechanism helps avoid common side effects such as enamel erosion, dentin sensitivity, and gingival irritation. It is typically delivered in ready-to-use trays or gels for over-the-counter use.
