Phthalocyanine is a synthetic, macrocyclic organic compound belonging to the class of tetrapyrroles. Structurally, it consists of four isoindole units linked by nitrogen atoms to form a large conjugated ring system with extensive π-electron delocalization. This structure imparts strong absorption in the red and near-infrared regions (600–700 nm), making phthalocyanines valuable as dyes, pigments, and photosensitizers. In medicine, certain derivatives of phthalocyanine are under investigation as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT), where they are activated by specific wavelengths of light to generate reactive oxygen species that destroy targeted cells such as cancer cells or pathogens. Phthalocyanines have been studied for use in treating actinic keratosis, Bowen's disease, skin cancer, mycosis fungoides, and cervical cancer[1][3][4]. They also find applications in catalysis and organic electronics.
